Have you ever improvised a solution with an object that has a specific job not related to your problem? For example, have you ever used a CD case to scrape ice off of your car or a comb to scratch your back? Objects can be used to multiple ways if we use our minds to think of some possibilities rather than just thinking of them for one specific purpose.
Our creative assignment the one day during composition class was to think of ten different ways to use a big paintbrush for something rather than painting. The paintbrush can be dismantled, whole, broke, wet, dirty, etc. When you first think of a paintbrush you specifically think painting; it’s tough to think outside the norm and come up with ideas but once our wheels started turning in our minds our class came up with so many different varieties of tasks for the paintbrush.
Many solutions solved by the paintbrush were for cleaning such as dusting, sweeping, or even one of those shoe cleaners at the door with all the bristles. Other ideas we came up with were things involved in cooking. You can baize a turkey with a big brush, attempt to spread icing on a cake, mix or stir foods with the handle, or even carve it into a fork or spoon.
Rather than painting, paintbrushes can be used for art such as abstract sculptures and more. These are just a few examples that our class came up with when we put our minds to different ways of thinking of a paintbrush. We came up with so many random and out there ideas that you would never think to use a paintbrush for. As you can see sometimes there’s a lot more to something than that meets the eye. We need to start thinking outside the box and out of the norms we know. By doing this we can find different solutions for multiple problems or simply just be creative in our own way of using and object and I believe that is what this exercise was for.
